    Painting on 1870 scene

I have been up in the wild, wooly back country of MN and picked up several items that may be of interest; eg., a nice imperial hirschfaenger and a 1914 luger which I hope to post later.
This painting has an original frame for the canvas but the outer gold frame is new. The size is 8 1/2'' x 6 1/2''. Above "Savarol" is written "Belecour 1886" tho I'm not sure of spelling. I have tried googling this but no info at this time. I did see one oil of a scene from this war that was painted in 1887.
I'm guessing that Belecour was a place for the scene and the painting was done in 1886 by an artist named Savarol. My German buddy thinks the last letter is an "L" and not a "P".
At first glance, I thought I might be looking at a colored photo as it hung on the wall of this shop. I was impressed with the perspective of the scene along with the details and the shadings that made the painting stand out as opposed to being "flat".
I also hope that you find this painting as interesting as I do.
Appreciate and commentary and ID help with a great thanks in advance.

What the writing on the wagon canvass says as it is not clear here is, "1 Rhein Inf Regt No 21 (or 24) Stabs Wagen"

Thanks for you nice commentary. Too bad I can't paint like this. The actual painting is sharper and more impressive than the pic above which is a little fuzzy and I have sharpened the detail to give a closer resemblance to the real pic.

            .

Theres sold a couple of paintings with that name in Denmark

            http://www.findartinfo.com/search/li...4&name=Savarol

Guess as unknown artist. Belbeau or something???... maybe it is the signature and the Savarol mean something else???. Anyway great find, and would not be surpriced if its a 1000 dollar or more painting. But anyway you need to find a antique frame for it... the new one is really horrible.

Thanks, Nicolai, for your input. I couldn't get the info off the link because I think they want people to send them money first. maybe later.
I'm including as much of a blow up of the Bellecour 1886 but my software limits me to just 2 increases. I think you can expand the view on your computer at least once before the resolution becomes too distorted.
Hope you can see this followup
              later, van

Wow, Nicolai, you have done me a great favor. If you ever get to the Houston, TX, area I will get you a beer, coffee, etc.
Here is a link with a number of his paintings most with sourcing from Sotheby's and Christies. The style and signature are right on except all the military scenes here appear to be of the French. Wonder why he did one on the Germans?

                      more info

Here is some interesting info on the painter Berne-Bellecour, 1838-1910, who fought for France in the Franco-Prussian war and concentrated thereafter on scenes from the war as opposed to battles for the rest of his life.
I have been able to view over 3 doz paintings and read descriptions of a doz and a half others. Christies has sold at least 26 and Sothebys at least 11 over the last few years. He did few civil paintings.
Of all that I have researched to date, everything has had a French theme.
Why did he do this German headquarter scene?
Is this a fake by a modern artist? There are companies that have artists copy famous painters' paintings. I do not think this is a copy because of the age indications of the canvass and original frame. And there is not enough money for a fake as his paintings of military are not as pricey as his civil where one large still of a desert table brought 127k at Christies in 2000 tho a large military sold this May at Heritage for 18k.
My pic of this painting, tho reasonably good, can't pick up the niceties of detail that really accentuate how nice this painting is.
Hope someone here can answer one or more of these questions or add more info such as, what is "Savarol"?
