Plus, I have almost thirty mounted medal setups (single mounts and multiple bars) and none of them has the "safety pin" type attaching arrangement that this one (the subject of this thread) has. Does anyone have a bar with a pin like the one on this one?GeorgeComment

Never seen a 'safety pin' attatchment either...mine is a slip on like Georges right down to the matching 'stippling', but the Mark is on the reverse of the ribbon slot..
This is a good thread 1870 Wiederholungsspange where Tims' (Tamerlanes) opinion here is echoed by GERD....
It appears the Maker Marked 'slip-ons' appear to hold a lot of credence by consensus..

The Spange does not have a safty pin attachment , the oaks do, which is common.
Tha spange has prongs, which would make perfectly good sense if were to be mounted on a parade mount.
Also back to post #17 where an original examples do not have the beading

The oaks have a safety pin? Yes, Previtera does say on page 152 even a safety pin type fastening... Apparently the Kaiser wanted it attached "just so" and this required a few variations so the vets could be in compliance with the Kaiser's commands.

None, of the damn photos I have allow you to blow up the Spange on the vet to see what it is. Anyone have a period photo that's clear enough to show the pebbles around the cross? But one photo doesn't show what might be more than 1 variation...Comment

I've read and re-read Tim's post regarding the Sauerwald article.
I have to postulate one more possibility. Joe's piece may be a classic early awarded piece, not made by Wagner. Reading Tim's words over and over leads me to speculate that the Wagner pieces are indeed real, but, someone else also created awarded pieces. And, that these pieces are not maker marked and do not have the pebbles around the EK.
I would like to see the non-pebbled version to see if it matches Joe's.Comment
