I meant using my eye AND a measure!
          I'm too lo-tek to own a caliper
          regards

I get it. 41mm is a very good sign that it was made closer to the award period -- possibly even in the 1870s.

Most believe that Type Bs (like yours) were never actual award pieces, but rather replacements or zweistücken. There are others who dispute that claim and hold that Type Bs were indeed awarded. At this juncture, no one can really say with absolute certainty which view is correct. However, the size, the jumpring repair, and the core type on yours all point to a very early cross based on the information we have currently available to us.

To this I would add only that the wear to the 8 o'clock beading rim on the reverse side indicates to me that this piece may have been removed at some point from a medalbar. I've seen this kind of wear before and had it pointed out to me that the other decorations rubbing against the fine beading rim probably caused it. The fact that similar wear may be seen on the obverse side indicates that perhaps this was on a non-Prussian bar in which the Iron Cross was not in the first position (in other words, another medal at 1 could have worn down the corner between the obverse 9 and 10 o'clock beading rims). All this medalbar stuff is extremely speculative, just based on the few photos available.

The bottom line is, it's a very nice period piece with a lot of character.
