        Hinge

After the debacle with the other EK1, I'm gunshy. http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=43227

            Hi Ralph,

No, this is not what Übergrosse refers to when talking about EKs. Übergrosse refers specifically to oversized (almost RK sized) 1939 EK2s.

I think you've done alright with this one nevertheless! The hinge pin catch construction is typical of 30s awards like SA Sports Badges. I've seen the same construction on Spanish Crosses, Spanish pattern Wound Badges and 1939 EK1s (maybe one or two other awards as well). Some people believe they are reproductions but I like them and think they are probably period pieces.

Is yours one-piece? It sort of looks it and I seem to recall a 1939 EK1 with this attachment hardware also being one-piece.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

I own a one piece, screw back which matches the core characteristics of your piece Ralph, even has that “pebble” affect, I agree with Mike that these are 30’s private purchase pieces, I call these the “el cheapo” EK.

                Thanks for the comments

It is of one-piece construction. Is it unusual to find one this size? It seems to be 2-3 mm wider than others I have on-hand.

I have a KVK 1 with Swords with the same hinge, pin, and catch. I've heard them attributed to Petz & Lorenz U. Reichenbach WTTBG.

Here's an 'uebergrosse' EA cross with a curious finish to the oaks and crown.

Here's a 'pebble core' EK2 from a Bavarian bar. The cross is three piece.

Sal, an EA cross is an Ernst-August-Cross(1st class above) from the state of Braunschweig.
