    Odd EK2 w/scrunched dates

Here's another one that I showed Greg M at the recent Minnesota Military Collector Show.

Thought all you other EK collectors might enjoy this odd looking piece. As you'll see, the "4" and the "3" are really scrunched in to fit inside the frame. The dates are really sloppy looking. Ring is unmarked. Anyone know who made this core???

This EK2 has the poorest detail to the core of any in my collection. It's also odd to see how the "W" on the "FW" is scrunched or arched on the lower portion of the "W" to accomodate the oakleaves.

Any comments are welcome. Thanks everyone!

I have one of these, and I believe they are always unmarked. The reverse core is one I've seen used by Wagner & Sohn, and I believe it is a match to the 1870 Type A, but with very poor details (obviously). The obverse core is one of two I've seen used with this reverse. I think these are uncommon, if not rare, crosses. They are often sloppy, but sometimes they are nice:

Lots of variation in core detail and hence quality in 1914 EK2s, from the crisp JWS pieces to some like the one shown that at very mushy so to speak.

Very unusual. The first I've seen. Seems like there are endless variations, which of course makes collecting them so much fun. Regards, Ron.

              Thanks Guys!

Trevor's EKII is a similar sloppy detail style, but it is a bit different.

Note how the top circle of the "8" of the "1813" on mine is considerably larger than the bottom circle on the 8 on the obverse of the cross. And the "3" is definately "pushed-in" or extremely scrunched towards the rest of the "1813". You'll notice how the top portion of the "3" leans in considerably to make it visible inside of the frame, and the size of the "3" is definately abbreviated from left-to-right to accomodate fitting within the frame.

Thanks Trevor for posting your example, it makes for a great study between the two crosses.

                Hi Alan,

I agree these are interesting crosses. Unfortunately the one I showed isn't mine. This one is mine. There are some differences between the cores, but I think they were probably made from the same mold -- while it may be true that "the die don't lie," the mold sometimes does .
