EK1 WS with Pin Marked A

Recent pick up i noticed the pin marking long before the WS stamp, the light in the shop was bloody awful. Has this A looking mark been noticed before its right up close to the hinge on the underneath of the pin, so only noticable when the pin is 'open' fully

These marks have been seen under EK1 1914 pins before. The theory is they are quality control marks.

I presume we're finding these 'A's across the different makers or are there different stamps or just the A?

& thanks guys, alittle rust just to the lower right of the W on the core but a nice little EK

By the way, nice patina on that cross.

                    Hello

I don't know anything about the 'A' mark (but would like to hear more about it), but I do know a great looking, original EK when I see it

                    Regards
                    David

Yours is a top shelf cross indeed. And thanks for posting this thread. Immediately after reading it, I examined all my EK 1s and discovered that I too have one with a pin mark. My cross is maker marked S-W on the pin's obverse center. And the pin mark is '9' located at the top near the hinge like on yours, on the pin's reverse. I would have probably never noticed it had it not been for your post. Thanks again.

                      Best,

                      EK Hunter

                        Hi evilmike,

Indeed, a nice (imo later) incuse relief WS.

Re the stamp under the hinge, looks like you have the "flying A" (or EA, E back to front) stamped version. Many stamps can be found in this location - all tiny (although the SW numbers can be "large"). Letters in this location (B, V, Z/N, etc) are not uncommon on WS and FR/Fr examples. SWs often have a number. I have a Werner with roman numerals.

The exact reason will never be known and some sort of QC (or assembler's letter) is the best explanation so far.

                        Regards
                        Mike

My Imperial EK 1 mm WS has also a mark in the pin, a reversed R.
