Bill, I believe the one you have stamped Germany is a newer one. Also see some stamped Italy. The older crosses are not marked, at least the ones I have had. The best way to check the age is to look behind the medal Christ. If hollow it is not old and if solid they are older-Early 1900's or so. I get some every now and then from a friend who has a antique business in Germany and the cross on ebay looks no different from the ones I get. I don't think that it is what he says and woould never pay that kinda money for it. Just my two cents anyway! MikeComment

Mine is not marked in any way.
But here it is........and it appears to be identical to one of the crosses shown in the reference book in this thread!

This one is 16 cm long and 8 cm wide.
Maybe they were made proportionally to the wearer, and this was owned by a BIG priest!

A picture (nearly 100 Kb, sorry for the size if you don't have broadband) of last year's exhibition in Gheluvelt when my book about the village in WW1 was published.
My friend has a very large collection and has a German WW1 chaplain's uniform (the only one that I know to be still existing). We work together for exhibitions.

doing some zoom in on that photo, it seems that this chaplain's uniform has a small cross type on his hat. This is a great hat and please Jan, if I could get some extra photos I would totally appreciate it!
To better explain what I mean I will offer the following two photos. It seems to me that two seperate crosses were used in the Imperial era. One large, one smaller.
The first photo is of a chaplain with a larger size cross on his hat and what seems to be the same type cross that was auctioned at Kube's this year (and I missed it--urge to kill rising )
