    Grand Cross for Review

Hi, I wanted to see what everyone made of this WWI Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. Is this one authentic or a repro? This is what is stated in the listing.

"Very Rare Original WW1 Grand Cross of The Iron Cross Cased 800 Silver. Iron core body with 800 stamped silver frame around border. 800 stamped neck suspension ring. Full neck ribbon with tie string ties. Small single bar ribbon bar. Unmarked black leather case with hinged top and locking front. Overall this fine rare piece is in very good condition."

And what is a good price to pay for one of these?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I consider this a fake, but there are many who disagree with me. The alternative theory, which I do not believe, is that this pattern of GK was made by Wagner as display or Museum pieces.

Its a common fake, it would price it around 500€.

How would a common fake bring 500 Euro? Isn't it pretty much worthless?

I always question myself how some KC usual rounder copys can get sold for 250+€ as well.. Anyhow, someone buys them.

Quality does not constitute a 'museum' or 'jeweler's' copy of the period.

Who knows what those are and who made them, ...here is one of the same type of GC that was sold not long ago on ebay for $1336.

The case is similar (but not identical) to the one my Steinhauer & Lück Pour le Merite came in.

I thought the same thing about the case, the case with postwar S&L PLM I had looked very similar only no push button and I think the ribbon is for PLM not for GC.

That about sums it up, Alikn.

To me, they are outright fakes. They come with marks (I. Wagner, etc.) that are known on other decorations that are also fakes, in my personal opinion. But there is wiggle-room in all this. It's a matter of how comfortable you are with uncertainty in your own collection, and how large your wallet is (i.e. can you afford the risk?).
                              Best regards,
