From today's ASMIC convention show in Hartford: a nice Austro-Hungarian officer's "overlap" ribbon bar like Daniel's--

two of the generic "bravery" ribbons (probably the Military Merit Cross 3rd Class and a Signum Laudis), the plain red of a peacetime Signum Laudis, 1914+ Red Cross Decoration, 1898 and 1908 Military Jubilee awards, and the 1912/13 Mobilization Cross. 40 mm silk ribbons overlapped and sewn together to take up less space

this is mounted on a metal backing contoured to the wearer's chest, with a substantial pin. No Troop Cross, so probably pre-1917.

            Karl Troop Cross

            Rick,

strangely enough, on looking through the 1918 edition of the Austro-Hungarian army "Rangliste" one can see hundreds of entries of guys with racks of front line decorations - Military Merit Cross, Military Merit Medal and Bravery Medals etc, yet no Karl Troop Cross.

This officer could have been some sort of behind the lines medical officer, but I'm assuming that his war ribbons were obtained before the end of 1916 regulations authorizing swords devices.

Here's my largest Austrian Ribbon Bar. Original silk ribbons with hooks on the reserve for connecting to the horizontal loops found on Austrian Tunics. Here the bar is displayed on my Olt Hussar Attila wchich actually has 7 golden loops for medals and two sets of black loops for breast badges.

                Nice ribbons:
                Iron Crown III w/ swds
Military Merit cross III w/ swds
Merit Medal in Silver wartime w/swds
                Merit Medal in Bronze peacetime
                Karl Cross
                War Service General War Service
                Long Service medal ?
                Jubilee Medal ?
                Jubilee Cross 1908

There is a great book "Imperial Austrian Medals and Decorations" by Joseph Von Falkenstien copyright 1972. Good luck in obtaining a copy It has a great color plate of all imperial ribbons the rest is black and white.
