Looks like it never seen the Third Reich and WW2. No transitional emblems, no swastikas. Maybe sent home during ww1. Are there lines on the helmet that look as if there was a sticker stuck to the helmet, most of the time the "shipping" sticker is on the front. My m16 has these lines showing where the shipping stick was. Good luck.

Sorry Christopher, I think you are mixing some things here...
M16 has a leather linerband and chinstrap that fits post M91 (like pickelhauben)
M17 has a steel linerband and chinstrap that fits post M91 (like pickelhauben)
M18 has a steel linerband with the chinstrap attached to the linerband (that's why you dont see the rivets for a chinstrap on the outside of an M18)
The one you are showing here is an M18 shell with an M31 liner and is therefore called a transitional helmet or "tranny"

Adler 1 is 100% correct. Adler 1, I've seen original WWI German chinstraps with rivets (although I don't like them), but, not with the shape of this brass M91 fitting. Do you believe this chinstrap to be an original?

Hard to see on the pics, but it's possible that it's a replacement. There also seems to be only one adjustment-slider (or how do you call it in English)...
I don't really like it, but it stands a chance... Better pics of the strap are needed to see it's genuine one or not...

As for riveted M16 chinstraps, I've seen and owned quite a few and have no doubt they are authentic. This one does look more like a repair though. Could you post someclose-ups of the liner pads, front and rear, and more of the chinstrap? I think that would help.
