Benignus von Sprottzliessl, in his pioneering "Wonder Awards Of Our Grampas," Schwäbisch-Gmünd, 1961, infers that these were either
a) for military nurses, whose "pocket" watches were also wrong-way up when attached to their ample Teutonic bosoms, OR
b) these are in fact very excruciatingly rare U-BOAT crew awards, because proper heraldic practice ALWAYS requires that a badge be pointing at the ground.

I once passed over a KVK2 with the 1939 upside down on the back.
The ring was soldered on the wrong side.... but it passed control.Comment
