This is a photo I got today and I already have the name and some infos.

It is Oberkriegsgerichtsrat Dr. jur. Hermann Maier,
born 20. April 1867 in Augsburg
died 11. April 1925 in Munich.
That's all I know.

I would like to know what the neck decoration is.
I am always collecting photos with all kind of neck awards, but, shame on me, I am still not familiar with imperial awards.

It's an Ottoman (Turkish) order:


Order of Medjidjie

Established in August 1852 as an award for special services to the State, either civil or military. Could be awarded to foreigners and came in 5 classes. Replaced the Order of Nishan El Iftihair which was abolished in 1852. The ribbon is red moire with green stripe towards each edge.

Ober-Kriegsgerichtsrat Maier

The Herr Ober-Kriegsgerichtsrat certainly had a good war. In 1914, the then Kriegsgerichtsrat Doktor Hermann Maier on the staff of the 1st Bavarian Infantry Division only had a Jubilee Medal to his name! He had been awarded the MVO4X with Crown and the EK2 by early 1916.

He was a Kriegsgerichtsrat (Rat IV. Klasse) as shown in photo from 13 May 1902. Judge Advocate Major was normally as high as anyone in this branch ever got.

From his awards (bar ends with "peacetime" Austro-Hungarian Red Cross Decoration, and Turkish Red Crescent Medal, probably in silver) he must have been attached to the German Military Mission in Turkey.

His Bavarian Military Merit Order 4th Class with Crown and Swords on the War Merit Ribbon (one of about 60 awarded in this grade on the so-called "Beamtenband"-- I have found the published rolls are NEVER complete) was bestowed as a single award due to his rank on 17 June 1915.

Oberkriegsgerichtsrat

Nothing like the good old German Beamten to confuse issues.

Doktor Meier was appointed to the official grade of Ober-Kriegsgerichtsrat sometime after 1914 but before early 1916.

The badges of rank of both the Bavarian Oberkreigsgerichtsrat with the rank of the 4th class of the military administration and the Kriegsgerichtsrat with the rank of the 4th class of the military administration are exactly the same - that of a Major.
