    Austrian Karntner award-need info please.

I recently purchased a ribbon bar from Austria that the seller informed me was the " Karntner kreuz fur Tapferkeit". Anyone know about this award and what it was awarded for ? I don't have the bar here as yet, only a picture.

Last time I saw one of these it was illustrated on Glenn's site (Austro-Hungarian Army) on the discussion forum. There was a lively discussion about the border war and Austrian Freikorps over there too. Try there.

      Kärntner Kreuz

The Kärntner Kreuz was founded by the Carinthian State Council on the 4th of November 1919 in four grades:

      General Carinthian Cross for Merit
      General Carinthian Cross for Bravery
      Special Carinthian Cross for Merit
      Special Carinthian Cross for Bravery

The General Cross for Bravery was awarded to all personnel who had taken part in the fighting or who had been wounded through enemy action in the defence of Carinthia against the South Slavs. Additionally those members of Volkswehr, Alarm or Heimwehr formations who had served on defence service for 28 days were also eligible.

The Special Carinthian Cross for Bravery was awarded for distinguished
leadership of fighting troops or outstanding bravery.

The cross itself was made of zinc with the inscription on the obverse: Kärntner Freiheitskampf 1918-1919 and in the case of the Bravery Medal Für Tapferkeit on the reverse side. The ribbon was yellow-red-white. Like the Iron Cross, the General Cross was worn from a ribbon on the tunic front whereas the Special Cross was worn without a ribbon on the left breast. Carinthian Crosses remained the property of the awardee or his family on the death of the holder.

      Regards
      Glenn
