what do you think it is made from and what era? 20's?

Dont know much about these pilot badges and there seem to be a lot of variations

    All help most appreciated

Looks like a good one, although the condition is a bit iffy.

is the pitting on the reverse of the crown normal?

Dave, is there a vent hole behind the pin? It appears to be a hollow, two-piece type in tombak. Not sure what happened to the finish, perhaps it was exposed to something corrosive.

Hi Vince: not sure these are the only pictures that I have.

I have decided to wait for a better badge to come along

            many thanks for your help

            cheers

I think your right to steer clear of that one IMO its cast from an original. There is noticeable pitting above the plane and also that bumpy texture above the hinge indicates this. Looking at the obverse you can see tombak peeping through where the silver finish is worn away but some highpoints on the wreath are flat and worn but have the silver finish intact- bad sign.

As the others have voiced ,it looks a little worrying in as much as the piece does look to be a casting from an original badge by the maker who used the square punch MM. Pin looks nearly right but hinge set up is wrong for this type. Certainly the wear to the detail on front of badge but still silver plated is a cause for concern unless it was re-plated. I would leave it alone. Ferg1.
