When I first glanced at this cross, my first thought was that it was a "9th bead" fake
and I made comments stateing as much. After reading Kirke's reply and taking the
time to actually study the pictures, I was wrong in my assumption.

A better straight on shot of the cross (one that shows the crown details) will definately help in making a good judgement call on the is cross. The flat "8" in the 1870 date is a good
sign and eliminates the possibilty of this being a 9th bead fake.

        Kirke--sorry again for my mistake.

            well,
I dont see 9th bead fake, no undersized 5th, no over under date. wt comes in at 17g.
but I confess these pictures are dreadful.
I'll try to post better ones tomorrow and please have a look.

Looks nice to me at first glance. Better photos would help. The frame cutout is off-center, which is a bit strange. Check out the uneven flange width on the reverse:

              Best regards,

                    Much nicer pictures.
Core details match the early "type A" cores offered by Godet and Wagner.
( although the details are a little soft in the crown and I can't tell what is going on with the top of 8 and 7 in the 1870 date )
The core is blackened not painted and has wear in all the right spots and the frame has a nice patina.

All in all, I would be happy with this one in my collection.

Agree with Greg, definitely a period example.

                        Thanks gentlemen.
Greg, the weirdness on the 8 and 7 is actually reflection, they are still (fairly ) square. (nothing smarter than photographing outside in the sun on a glass table!)
