But the "25 years faithful service"-cross should be turned - it has the reverse side to the front.

      Regards,

True but perhaps the owner wore it post WW2.

          Hi Michel,

nice looking bar, but may I ask which medal does not originally belong to the bar? And will you remove it, should you decide to sell it on?? Or will the next person to "own" this (in a year or in a 100 years) regard this ensemble as "original"?

Just a thought (and I suppose a continuous worry for a collector).

          Regards
          Thorsten

            Hi Thorsten,

you are right. That is a worrying thought. As you can see it is easy to put a medal bar together. In my first post I ment medals, not medal. Nothing on this bar was once an ensemble. So it will be my responsibility to mentioned that if I sell it. As I am a collector I will. However the next owner (I hope it will be in a 100 years ) may keep that a secret.

I think some of these medal bars are put together or restored with one or two medals. The same applies for combinations of medal diplomas /urkundes with medals.

You can never be sure if you buy something like that without real provenance; hence it will be your own decision (and trust in the seller) if you do so.

I share your opinion that it will remain a difficult question and a collectors worry.

            Kind regards,

            Michel

              Hi Michel,

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I concur with you 100%. To be honest, if I look at my own collection, I could only say of about 6 or 7 bars that the ensemble is completely period (those whose awards have been sewn in with period thread). And you are right about so-called "groups" with awards and the respective documents. I always think that of offers of a loose award together with a "photo of its bearer". True? Or matched up? Unfortunately, complete certainty only ever exists by knowing the full provenance. And provenance comes along very rarely.

Still, a great hobby, wouldn't you agree?

Nothing wrong with a restored bar as long an original and correct award is on it.
