The chain and all minis are of course original but not old manufactured and not for one person. This chains are made for a individual person like medal or ribbon bar, so whom should this one belong if the combination is impossible.

Maybe the most awards belong on this chain but the observer in combination with the GMVK not. So one or both are later attached.

    Regards Alex

      Dear Alex,

Could this person have earned the GMVK as an infatry EM/NCO and then transferred to the Air Service?

You are correct Don on the observers being officers. Udet was an NCO pilot but later became an officer. His observer was always an officer. In the rank list, there were a number of GMVK recipients but most were ground guys.

I could find no listing in 1924 of any Beobachter with a GMVK. One can scarcely even find any airman with the award.

An exception was Josef Mai. Although a pilot of astounding ability from 1915 onwards, he was not commissioned until September 1918, by which time he had already shot down 23 aircraft. He went on to shoot down seven more airplanes that month. He was recommended for the Blue Max but the war ended before it could be awarded. 24 of his 30 victories were fighter aircraft and he shot down 4 British aces. Had he been an officer longer, he no doubt would have had awards aplenty, the the GMVK speaks for itself.

His rank list awards were - GMVK, EK1, EK2, WB, & FlAb.

For several reasons, I would be highly skeptical of this group.

No person who got the GMVK prior to air service and later got observer.
