    eBay - WW I Butchers Bayonet ???



    Posted in Daggers Forum also; but anyone ever heard of a WW I German Butchers Bayonet ?? Comments appreciated. Thanks.

    That is a very common ww1 German bayonet. It is refered to a Butcher

    knife bayonet because the blade is shaped like a kitchen butcher knife.

    Here is one of mine that is the slightly more uncommon sawtooth version.

        Officially the Seitengewehr 98/05, it was introduced in 1905. Originally intended for Pioneeer and Telegraph Troops, by 1914 and throughout the War it was found in widespread general use. There are 2 models, apart from the sawback: the S98/05aA, with long "ears" on the back side of the guard, and the nA, introduced in 1915, with shorter "ears" and a flash guard to prevent charring of the wooden grips from muzzle blast. There are, however, examples of the aA with a flashguard and vice versa. The early model has a leather scabbard with steel throat and toe cap, which was replaced by an all steel type later.See John Walter's "The German Bayonet".
