    J.R 386 Group Photo

Thought I'd share this recently acquired group photograph of a seriously tooled-up bunch of soldiers from J.R 386, taken at Dixmunde in 1917. Not the kind of guys you'd want to bump into in No-man's Land on a dark night...

What sort of pistols have they got, I wonder?

The VERY angled little holsters look like the sort of "suicide special" pop guns officers carried as field belt ballast (not good for much else! )

        in the dark

Some of those poor devils look like they ran into large, stationary, and quite immovable objects while running the dark .These J.R's look like they fit the true spirit of that sort of reg't. whether British or French;self sufficient, self motivated, and armed to the teeth.

Very strange. Maybe one of the Dreyse self bought pocket pistols (perfect for trench fighting). They are short before a "Stoßtruppunternehmen" with such an amount of Model 16 and 17 stick grenades!

I think the "physique" of most of these guys is more down to my dodgy scanning than any no-mans land mishap...

Not sure about the pistols, probably Dreyse pocket models like Jens says, or perhaps some other commercially acquired Steyr or small-calibre Mauser model. I'll take a look in Walter's "Central Powers Small Arms of WWI" to see what I can come up with..

            Cheers
            Paul.
