    Strange Ek1, Home made fake?

    Hi All,

recently acquired this (broken now glued, I guess someone tried to bend it.. to check fakeness) one piece non magnetic EK1.

However IMO the crown date and W look a bit like the WS core (the first one in the ek database) see
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=263254
which is used in more EK1's.

The W looks even like it is behind the frame...
Is this a home made cast from an existing cross? Is it a known fake?

    Thanks in advance,

    Michel

Yuck, no offence but that is one ugly thing. Gotta be a fake in my opinion.

              Thanks Don, Kay and Jesse,

Is this a common fake? Sort of "cast your Iron Cross at home" Kit?

If someone want add it to permanently to the imperial fakes thread, be my guest!

              Best regards,

              Michel

Hello Michel, I have not seen one like this before, though I have seen very similar hing and pin set ups on other fakes.
Somebody went to a bit of trouble to make this, I don't think it's a home made job, but who knows.

                Regards,

                J

Never seen this one before, but though without a doubt a modern, cast fake.

                        That's an interesting statement.

Greg, are you saying that in the 1960s biker made, or had made WWI EK1s for their personal use? I wouldn't think you would have to bother...there were lots of EK1 around -for cheap.

I'm not challenging your information, I'm just trying to understand the motivation for making (even a poor cast) EK1, when you could get them at any gun show....or was it that they weren't as prevalent as they are now!

I remembers seeing a lot of ww1 and ww2 Eks advertised for sale
in Biker magizines and novelty catalogs that also sold T shirts and
other such crap. Most were cast in lead or some sort of other cheap
pot metal. Back in the mid 60s every teenage boy had a malteese
or "surfer" cross hanging from a chain. I've still got a cast lead
TR ek1. If I can find it, I will post it for you.

I'm not saying that I am 100% positive that is what this is but it has
                          that look to it.

Please post it Greg, if you can find it.
It would be interesting. I think this one is not lead, but I'm not sure about the material.
It had a "brittle" break (complete breakage at once after some plastic deformation).

                            Best regards,

                            Michel

An obvious copy. The details of the crown and date are not clear and crisp for what this should be.
