I have a WW1 Iron Cross 1st class. It is almost mint condition. On the back is the mans name. Scratched into the medal it says: Feldw. H. Basse 1917 17/3 This is one of the best things in my collection. I bought it from a vet who brought it back from Germany in WW2. I found it by reading the Numistimatics Journal classifides medals listings about nine years ago. I paid $75 for it. The same man sold me a very near mint WW2 IC 1st screwback. It has the scalloped type screwback. I paid $85 for that. Money well invested. Sorry I dont have a camera. Isn't there a book that list all WW1 IC 1st winners? Do you think 17/3 is divisional info or date. Thanks in advance for info.

Donald,
Too bad you can't post images. I would like to see the reverse! As far as the numerical portion of the inscription: The dated parts on all of my engraved EK1s have a '.' separating the numbers i.e.: '17.3', instead of a slash. My guess is that it may be divisional info.
You have to be VERY careful with hand engraved EK1s as there are many engraved examples that have had their inscriptions added many years after the medal was made.
Hope this helps a little bit, at least.

--1917 17/3 would be March 3rd 1917. There is no book (that I know of) that contains the listing of 1st class EK's in any of the years that it was instituted.
--The only thing I can think of is to hope Rick L. sees this post, he may be able to consult his stack of rank lists and such and find the man you are looking for...
