    1870 Medal Bar Group

Hi Guys, I found these at an estate sale. Owner knew nothing about them other than they were not “Hitler medals”. The pin attachment for the 1870 1st class is very much like the attachment pin for a Braunschweig Star Commander of the Henry the Lion order I once owned. Any observations? I wish I could confirm the 1st class as part of the group. Was this guy a Wurttemberger, Braunschweiger or Prussian?

Hello Christian, thanks for the reply, surprised to see the thread sink so fast without any comments. I think your friend is wrong. The Fred. Order is 1870’s period. If you look at the hinges where the cross is attached to the swords, you see the ‘squared off’ attachments. I am listing a photo of a WW I group above, notice how the attachments connecting the swords are rounded. My Wurttemberger friends tell me both of these Fred. Orders are by the firm of ‘Foehr’ of Stuttgart. I have another of the order made by the Royal Wurtt. Mint (Konigl. Munzamt) which is WW I era and also has the ‘rounded’ attachments for the swords. Anyhow, it would seem odd to have a WW I order among the 1870 awards. I welcome any other opinions/observations on Christian’s suggestion. Does anyone have an 1870 IC 1st with the double pin attachment?

                  hello bobby,
you could be right - have more or less no experience with the FO.
i only thought to post his experience.
and thanks for the explanations - everyday i learn more!

Hi Christian, I fully agree with your observation on the learning opportunities at this site. I, for one, find, "The more I learn, the less I know" in full operation. I am always looking for other opinions and observations to sort out the actual facts of the history we study and collect. More than once I have been "set stright" by the excellent inputs of our members.
                    Best, as always
                    Bobby

All the nuances to determine a fake EK1 and EK2 from a real one boggles my mind, although there certainly are a fair share of threads about this subject on this forum. Is your 1870 EK2 a fake? Maybe there some "knowlegeable" types who could provide some insight into this.

                      Regards

                      Dave

Hey Dave, I don't think the IC 1st is a fake just considering the source I got it from but all inputs are wlcomed!

                          I don't see any....

... obvious problems with Bobby's group, or the EK1 everything looks in correct matching condition and era. It's an outstanding set imo. I think the "tweezers" safety catch is an afterthought though, it does look like it was jeweler added after the issue pin broke. Not an uncommon problem with the period crosses. Both EK's show the depth and detail I would expect from period pieces. While not as crisp/slim as I usually see, the crown, W's and numbers are well within what I would expect from period pieces, possibly/probably mounted up ca 1895, when the O/L jubillee spange came out.

Hi Rick, thanks for the observations. I agree that the pin looks like a repair similar to the "tweezers" illustrated in Previtera's 'The Iron Time'. To the pm inquiry, the WW I group shown for comparison is from a group I picked up some months ago which I hope to list as a seperate thread as soon as I get a couple of pictures developed. It belonged to a Haupt. Otto Stumpf. Rick Lundstrom, Jan (AOK4) and Jorge were very helpful in getting me started on the research. More to follow.
                            Happy holidays to all,
                            Bobby lee
