    Hessian Kriegerehrenzeichen--and stickpin!

I'm posting these for Ted. the Kriegerehrenzeichen (somehow "Warrior Decoration" just sounds odd in English!) is of decent white alloy, silvered and blackened.

The matching mini is unmarked silver:

Several of these have come up before--Jens has one, and who has the other-- Dave, or Eric? Carl's got one, but we haven't seen a scan yet.

And they all seem to be slightly different! I've seen them in war zinc, "Buntmetall" like the one above, real silver, pinback, screwback....

Theoretically this badge was the "equivalent" of an Iron Cross 1st Class, but in my experience, it is far, far scarcer. There was absolutely nothing "automatic" about Hessian holders of an EK1 getting this "next." I've seen Hohenzollern House Order with Swords recipients without one of these. I would put this badge, therefore, more on a plane with the HHOX than the EK1.

Since it was created in 1917-- the Ducal "25th Jubilee Year" oddly and inappropriately noted in the design--there should have been ample "opportunity" to award these decorations. Yet that does not seem to have happened.

        Hi Rick,

I have got three of them, 2 "old" ones and a model of 1957. The "old" ones are both made of blackened iron and silvered zinc. I think the most expensive on these badgese are the silvered brass pinbacks

As I know they were awarded only to native Hessians for multiple acts of gallantry in action. I've heard from Stephan that there were only 2000 of them awarded which makes them much rarer than the Hohenzollern-Orden.

        Best regards

Here is an example that complements Ted's version quite nicely. I looks to be from the same maker as his (tombac wreath, same method of assembly, etc.).
This one is screwback and much harder to find! Very well made.
