Help needed with Imperial Service medal ID

From what I gather from the award document, which has suffered some damage along the fold lines, the medal that I am trying to ID is a Silver Service medal with swords. Much more than that I do not know and since I have no imperial reference works I don't even have a starting point. This guy was apparently in the Kriegsmarine during WWI and WWII. I have his Fuehrungsbuch, 2 WWII WMC's with swords in bronze with one award doc (unfortunately cut down), the service medal and doc displayed here, the WW1 EK2 shown in picture, the Hindenburg Cross shown in picture, the ribbon bar shown in the pic, a small Imperial naval ensign, a cigarette case and a shoulder patch with anchor and crossed cannons. I have been considering offering this lot on the e-stand as Imperial is not really my interest and I need to raise some cash but hesitate do so until I translate the Fuehrungsbuch entries to learn more about this guy. I also need some help with the service medal as I don't have a reference that will help me with said award or a point in the right direction where I can research this award. I don't want to wind up giving the set away, but don't want to overprice it either. Any help would be appreciated.

That's the Silver Merit Medal with Swords of the Principality of Reuss-- that tiny state's equivalent of an Iron Cross 2nd Class. Your Obermatrose must have been a native of that place.

Unfortunately no existing award numbers are known, but this was a very small state. The medal itself is not high value-- though I suspect if the Real Numbers were known, it MIGHT be... but that's the second award document for one I've ever seen.

Wow, thanks for the fast reply Rick. Maybe this little lot is worth keeping. I was thinking of selling it for $300 but am now intrigued. I hate getting rid of anything anyway unless I have two of them. I didn't even know that there was a state of Reuss. How would he have wound up with the Prussian EK2 as well? The document is actually dated 1916, so well into the war. I think I may want to spend a little more time researching this lot before I do anything rash. The only book I have that even touches on Imperial and the Principality of Ruess is an old Vernon's Collector's Guide. Can you recommend any books that might deal with the awards of this Principality? I may spend a few days trying to translate the Fuehrungsbuch for details on this guys service. He was born in 1892 and the Fuehrungsbuch has his picture from probably about 1940 when he was already 48 years old. He apparently made it to Oberbootsmann on May 1, 1945 and this appears to be the most recent entry.
      Thanks again!
