Transfer to the West and re-assignment

At the beginning of November Richard Werner was assigned to the infantry replacement centre at Beverloo and spent a month there, probably learning or brushing up his infantry skills, before he was posted to "Gruppe Lille" of 4. Infanterie-Division in the field at the beginning of December 1917.

Service with 4. Infanterie-Division in the West

Richard Werner was assigned to 1. Kompagnie of Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 49 and immediately saw action in positional fighting in French Flanders in December 1917.

He took part in the 1918 Spring offensive as part of General-Leutnant Kühne's XI. Korps (part of von Below's 17. Armee) in the Monchy-Cambrai sector of Operation Michael and the fighting for Bapaume. In early April he was promoted to etatsmässiger Gerfreiter and Unteroffizier 6 weeks later.

In late September he was wounded in the leg by a shell splinter near Fleurbaix. On 18 November he was bumped up to Vize-Feldwebel for "distinction in the face of the enemy".

        Back to Silesia

From February 1919 he served with 1. Maschinen-Gewehr-Kompagnie of Infanterie-Regiment von Winterfeldt (2. Oberschlesisches) Nr. 23 and saw action on the Silesian border. He was discharged at his own request in mid May 1919.
