HI all.
I need some help identifying a knife I bought. I bought it from an acquaintance who said his father-in-law brought it back from WWII. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and one of his jobs was to escort German (Afrika corp) prisoners from Africa to the U.S, for confinement. He got this dagger from one of the prisoners. It has an Ebony handle with brass colored guard and end piece (that looks like might be aluminum or something under the finish.. The portepee knot is black and gold. The blade is close to 8" in length with an over all length of 13". The blade is marked D. O. V. Berlin and has a polished finish to it. No date. You can see photos of it on: http://s376.photobucket.com/albums/oo207/Dennis-444/
With my limited knowledge, it looks like a fighting knife or dagger. The portepee looks to me to be for a sword. I saw a portepee exactly like it on Ebay that was listed as a WWI knot. Do the colors black and gold signify anything in particular? From the leather scabbard, it might be from the WWI era. Maybe a private purchase?
Anyway, any light you can shine on this would be greatly appreciated as I've searched the internet to try and find something similar and have not been successful. Also if you have any idea what the value might be that would be fun to know. I paid $80.00 for it.
Thank you for any help you might give on this matter.
