    Kaerntner Freiheits Kreuz 1er Stufe

I don't know a lot about this badge and am hoping that someone is willing to give the run-down on it. It's a very substantial hunk of silver with a period repair, which doesn't surprise me one bit considering it's thickness and weight. The lower badge comes from the same region and is silver as well.

Just as Germany was faced with land grabs by bordering countries at the end of W.W.I, Austria had a dustup in Kärnten (Carinthia). The area had been an Austrian crown land since 1849, but parts went to Italy and Yugoslavia in 1918 after a period of local conflict. Possession of the southern part was confirmed to Yugoslavia in a 1920 plebicite.
In 1919 the Landesrat of Kärnten established awards for the Austrian "freikorps" that had resisted the transition. A ribboned version was for service, while the pinback was for gallantry. Both types came plain and with small laurel leaves between the arms (Eric's version).

The other badge loks to be one of the zillion German/Austrian unit/patriotic "tinnies" of W.W.I.

      Thanks very much, Rick!

Does anyone have an idea of how many first class awards were bestowed? I am assuming that the numbers were low and that this is a relatively rare Freikorps-era piece. the picture of the reverse doesn't show it well, but the period repair was done with a tinnie type pin that was soldered on in place of the original pin and catch. Most of the original catch is intact.
