One interesting thing I just noticed tonight. In a very nice PM, a member pointed out to me the "straight" tail feathers characteristic of these pieces, as opposed to the "curled" tailfeathers of a Godet. In re-looking at one of the photos I saw something I had not seen before: what appears to be the remnants of a "curled" tailfeather on the eagle below the "l" in "le Merite". I have blown up this photo a bit, cropped and rotated it, in the hope that someone can confirm what I THINK I see. Is this possibly a re-worked Godet eagle, or am I TOTALLY misinterpreting this?

I think it is fair to say it is. The eagles are so much like the standard Godet in most other respects. PlMs thought to be Schickles all seem to have the straight feathers, but when you look at the head, feet and wing details, they match up pretty nicely. Steve

Thanks, Steve! At least I know I'm not seeing UFO's on a PLM!

a example and a ball park figure on value of PLM

          Greetings,
I agree, This does look like a "Shickle" model.
It looks like a fine piece.

There is an example of what I believe to be a similar PLM on www.emedals.ca

The owner is Barry Turk, a most respectable gentleman who has one of these exact models on sale going for $9000. USD with COA D Neimann and Case.

The one displayed is a post WW! but he says the one he has is listed as pre 1945.

I noted that D. Neimann sold a 1980's recast PLM for $380 this week. Check it out in the new catalog section.
          Week of 12/15/08

          A very nice piece indeed.
If anyone has a rough idea on how many pour le merite's were issued, I would be grateful.

          with regards,
