    Imperial Austrian decorations

I was at a show today and saw a Austrain Red Cross decoration. The case was marked with a date 1896-1914 and Rothe. The cross was unmarked. Since I could not be sure it was a Rothe piece I did not buy it. The Austrian decorations are really nice and low priced. Can anyone recommend any referenced books about Austrain decorations? Also any advise would help. Thanks.

Were you at Union? (maybe I'll get back there in May...)

dates on the case "1896-1914" would seem to indicate either a private special presentation of an official piece (often done with Long Servivve Crosses, etc), or... this was not the "official" Red Cross decoration.

What did it look like? How much?

If it was the Decoration-- rounded end crucifix shape in red and white enamel, Red Cross in the center disk, "1914" on the reverse disk, no green enamel War wreath, on white ribbon with two narrow red stripes near each side, that was the official non-war related award as given to lower ranking officers and equivalents. The silver and makers marks are on the suspension ring, hooked up inside the ribbon. But those don't matter much-- I wouldn't pay a nickel for the Rothe "name"--there were plenty of other good makers.

It was the item you described and he wanted $80.00. He also had a Franz Joseph in a case and wanted $275.00. Nice pieces but I had no idea if the prices were good. I rarely see imperial items at the Union show.
