    eStand Saxe-Meiningen War Medal Bar

I normally would not give a single medal much thought but this Saxe-Meiningen War Medal Bar on eStand appears to be mounted rather recently.

I could be wrong of course, and do not intend to offend anyone--especially Pierce. But for the price asked for this late war zinc'er, I should hope that the mount and ribbon could be clarified as to originality or not. Thanks for humoring me and I hope I have not upset anyone about it. Just thought it needed a look for the amount of info provided on the sale thread.

Concerns of mine - thread style on the reverse. Thin thread in the double threaded stitch style is not common and speaks more to a modern job. The copper mount could be OK but....

I do believe the medal to be fine and a remount or re-ribbon is no problem to most of us. If it is, it should be so stated. Thanks, Steve

As stated by Steve, the medal, a mid-late war zinker, is good. I'd like to hear more thoughts on the mounting.

          Hi Steve et al.

Thanks for posting this here. To me this is not a recent mount, but has been in my collection for only a few months...i recently switched from TR to Imperial. So as to what it was awarded for, i am assuming bravery to an NCO?? My perogative is Bavarian Medal bars so i have not got much info on this award.

Also thanks for the info on it being a late war zinc piece, i will state this in my sales thread and adjust the price accordingly. thank you.

          My best to you all,
          Pierce

This award is the Medal for Service in War (War Service Medal) for Sachsen- Meiningen. This is the EK2 equivilent for enlisted men for this German State.

Steve ,what signs on the bar would lead to the opinion of the mounting not being period? I have started collecting Imperial German in the past year and am still finding my way so any thoughts on specifics as to why this bar might not be period mounted would be very welcome,as i'd know what to look out for.

                  Scott,

It may be OK but what I cannot tell clearly from the pic is whether the thread is looped over and doubled equally around the needle before stitched. This would be very uncommon. It might not be, but I cannot tell clearly and the thin thread is always cause for more scrutiny when I look at a piece. If it is thin, it is usually cotton, without sheen, and stitched in a single style rather than double.

Pierce, thanks for being a good sport and humoring us. When I saw the amount being asked (which is your prerogative) I wanted to ensure the mount is good for any potential buyer. It is a very clean medal at the least. Can you tell me if the thread is double or single stitching?

You also stated that the medal came off a bigger bar, which to me raised similar questions. Thanks, Steve

                      Hi Steve,

I think it is single stiched The thread is not doubled, but it is sewn up and down between the top and bottom of the ribbon, to keep it in place...

As for it coming off a bigger bar, i assumed this was correct because of the mounting plate?

                      Thanks

Thanks Pierce. Single stitch is good! And thanks for clarifying the mounting. I misunderstood that it was mounted from another bar.

As I look at the cloth under the ribbon for mounting, and if it is single stitch as you state, I feel better about it. The under cloth looks pretty decent like an original. Sometimes pics just don't show what is really there. Thanks for taking the time to answer questions on this. Steve
