Very nice album. I would say that the pilots in the photo suffered from frostbite...altitudes above 14000 ft would make one lose consciousness but would not puff out the face like that.

Interesting theory though.

Strange that she would get to the front lines to take pics. Is there a date on that photo? Perhaps her hospital moved forward during the Kaisershlacht.

Given the wind speed etc... it would not take much to get frostbite at even lower altitudes, especially in winter. The swelling is typical of 2d degree frostbite. 3rd degree they would be black.
