I wonder what they were printing. Probably this was a recurring top part of a page.

--You know, those were my thoughts as well.
--Big pages though, no? It looks to be around 11 inches wide.
--Document, I don't know. Maybe newspaper or book?

Maybe Rick L. will recognize a presenation page or awards page with this exact block.

it would be cool to find out what this was used on?? like a doc or news paper? it is milled and carved on a 1/4 cast iron type medal and tacked with about 6 nails onto a oak board with i think no#335 or so on it. it's up stairs so i'm guessing on the #..
do you think it's from the time? 1870?

            thanks greg

--Depending upon what it was for I would think it would be pre-Jubilee as there may have been a '25' reference otherwise....?
--Only a thought - I'm just shooting in the dark here, actually...

                Greg,
Nice item if I do say so myself. Bill, I sold this on eBay. I had this plate listed twice and Greg was one of the FEW bidders. Trouble with eBay is that it's gotten such a bad reputation from the scam artists that a lot of good collectors don't bother with it. You can still find good items. I've sold quite a few nice 1914 EK'1s in the past weeks. (seller b24d).

Greg, I've been a printer for 30 years. My opinion is that this is a ca. 1870-1900 period plate.

This might have been used on posters, like at the top would be the EK and then a message for that particular unit would be put on it, and then they would hang the poster up, and then when they got a new message, maybe even a order for all the troops to see, they would take that down and put up another message.

I think Tyler's probably right with his poster idea. The other plate I had awas cast iron and I believe it was used for printing cardboard cartons, maybe even the cartons crosses were shipped in. No one has used cast iron for printing plates since the 1860's-70's. It had the words "Eisernes Kreuz" and pictured an undated cross. I believe it was probably 1830's.
