Original or not I don’t understand why this particular combination with oaks and bar pops up in a singular unmounted format on a fairly regular basis, surely someone with this combination of the EK would have a campaign medal for the 1870/71 war, the 1897 jubilee medal, perhaps also a long service award? Yet where are these medals?
Ether something fishy is going on here or some idiot is cutting up good medal bars and selling the pieces off to try and make more money.

Ether way I don’t like it.

Sorry just had to have a grumble.

For this combination I would much prefer it all on a nice mounted medal bar that hopefully the owner could be traced down, or at the very least the division/regiment.

Justin; I am not raining on your parade here at all, far from it just raises some issues that maybe other collectors haven't picked up on and venting my personal preferences, goodluck with your find and hope it turns out to be good.

Well, it would be great if we could...

.... figure this out. I wouldn't touch one of these loose. But complete with a good 1870 & oakleaves. You bet. I was the seller of this piece. I let it go to Justin at cost as I felt bad I overbid him for it. (I was buying it for resale). I made no profit on this piece.
The bar matches 2 others I had perfectly. One was from Detlev Niemann and one was from another German source. The one I bought from Detlev was a parade mounted 1870 EK2 with O/L & Spange, but it had been cut off a medal bar! ( )
The other one was a cased 1870 EK2, with the bar and leaves mounted to the ribbon and the whole thing loose in a typical 1870's case from a Hamburg Jeweler.
      So that's 3 for me, 2 unmounted.
The only thing I could say is maybe those guys mounted stuff individually. I have a number of photos of 1870's era soldiers and vets with each medal pinned side by side on the chest. I also had an 1870 EK2 Non-Combattant. It was a single tri-medal mount with a pin back and it had the 1895 O/L attached at the ring. (Near as I could tell this is what held it all together!) Now this cross was obviously worn with pride and worn as a single.
Why this custom? I have no clue... but it was done as period photos bear this out.
I'll have Rick Lundström scan some to post for me. If I make the scans he'll complain about my lousy pix!

        Rick......

I've recently aquired an 1870 EK2 with Spange myself, so I would love to see some photos of them worn.

I think this is by favorite medal of my collection. Now I need an 1870 First class.
