it strikes me that all of these are beautiful and none are

twins. SOOO much variation among them....

anyone care to do a short synopsis on the manufacturing periods?
my understanding is that there were the originals, the 1830-1850
period, and the 1870's commemorative reissues. is this basically
            right?

            thanks from an 1813 neophyte.

Thanks, Frank! Joe, I'll do a synapsys for you. First there is the wartime manufactured pieces(1813-15), then the -20s and the early -30s. The last major patch that was made for the recipients was 1834-37 with about 7000 Crosses being produced. For jubilee and display purposes it was prolly produces right up to the 1st WW, with small numbers offcourse..

                thanks,blitz!!

is anyone aware of a photographic effort which shows the
changes in construction/appearance over the potential
                100+ years of construction?

i think it would be an excellent endeavor for a book!

                  Ek1 1813

                  Hello,

                  today I got my EK1 from 1813.
Unfortunately I can't post pictures yet. I posted two pictures on this forum:
                  http://samlarforum.skalman.nu/viewtopic.php?p=7767#7767

(The pictures are shrunk to 1/4.)

It's pictured in "The Iron Cross of 1939" (Gordon Williamson) on page 15. G.W. writes that it's one of the most common variants. Is Gordon active on this forum? I would like to know where he got the picture of his cross.

Can anyone say if this is an early cross?
Are there more collectors with an EK1 1813 that can share their photos?
I've checked the books by Previtera, Heyde, Nimmergut and Williamson - are there more books that covers the 1813 cross?

                  Regards, Stefan

                    Stefan...

Your link dosen't seem to be working - for me at least, so can not comment on the cross itself. If you want to e-mail me the pictures, I'll post them here for you. PM me.

As you are no doubt aware, period 1813 EK1's are a rare, rare beast...and because of the lack of comparible detail (no dates, no crowns, etc....) VERY difficult to authenticate. You might be better to start a new thread - although I fear scepticism is (understandably) the order of the day with '13 EK1's.

The books you mention are all fine, the key one you are missing for Prussian EK's is V.E.Bowens' 'The Prussian and German Iron Cross'...a wealth of info and plenty of (grainy) pictures!

What was the source of your piece?

(By the way FrankS - that is a great ek2 you have there. Certainly no dispute as to the core being stepped on that one!!)

Great EKs guys I am SOOOOOOO jealous.

Just one question. Are all of these 3 piece construction or are some of them
made with multi piece frames ?

Tony- congratulations on a great looking cross.

                            So...

So this is where all the 1813s have been. I have always wanted one for my collection. Actually, I need the 1813 and an 1870 first class. What does an 1813 go for?

                            All the best,

Stefan; I do not find your 1813 EK1 very convincing at all sorry, not one I would like in my collection.

                                Stefan,

Can you measure the height, width and thickness of your EKI? What is the weight?

                                Thanks,

                                Tony
