    Green,
Thanks... and you are correct. Cheaper. Do you own this book?

I've read these posts (from almost 10 years ago with huge interest. Trigger, it seems you have a very interesting, nice and maybe even extremly rare thing. Please, send some pics of the interior too, I can post them for you (or some other members will do that).

I can only strongly advice against any attempt to remove the cross. Getting an x-ray shouldn't be that hard. There are private doctors, veterinarians, and some technical guys also use x-rays for checking boilers, turbines etc. for cracks. Some of those will surely make some shots for reasonable price, it's a job anyway and you won't do anything illegal or harmful to anyone.

        All the best, Tony
        Interesting item and discussion thread.
If the plaque's large Iron Cross turns out
to be one sided, it might be from an IG flag
weather cover metal cap as shown below.

          Valter,
I do have no plans of risking damage by simply prying it off the cabinet... I will soon see my dentist anyway and ask about x-rays. And posting pictures of the interior of the cabinet... give me a bit of time as I found out my PC is so slow last night that I can't even upload the picture I made to Photo bucket so I can post the thing in this thread. Nice living on the top of a small mountain in the backwoods of Germany and not having internet that you can use to upload... lol... but it is that way. I will get it done, somehow. Besides... all the picture will show is a couple of bottles of Schnapps. But the cabinet is definitely not for keys and it has a lock on it and such. I still bet on it being the commanders property but that isn't the main question we have here in this thread I guess.
And OFW... where did that photo come from? Which museum collection? That looks like a good place to go look see what that thing looks like and I live only an hour from the French border. I could combine the trip to the museum with a rock concert I go to soon in the Saarland maybe... haha :-)

Wish me luck. This thing goes to the Vet in an hour to get it x-rayed...

Well.. an interesting quarter of an hour. First off, big discussion as to why and how it should be done. It ended up with one x-ray being taken directly straight at the back of the cross and then going with the box out to the stall and taking an angle shot with a wheel mounted x-ray camera for horses and one of us holding the box steady and the other holding the film cassette. Both of us wore protective vests/aprons and it went pretty fast. The 2 photos were developed by some big machine that the film cassette got stuck into and the x-rays ended up on a computer screen. I will get the photos in an eMail. I want to get a good look at them before making any comment... other than the fact that the two photos were a bit less expensive than I had expected... cut down from a hundred... to fifty bucks because the Vet said his father had been awarded one of those things... but he didn't think it had an 1813 on it...so he thought mine must be a fake as the date had to be wrong... :-)

Great news, I'm glad things went well with x-rays. Thanks for the pics of cabinet too, it's a really nice item. I like the schnapps shots set made from granades/cartridge too! Can you post some pics of that set too?

                      Valter,
I will try to get a photo of the set for you, but likely not here as it has nothing to do with the thread. Maybe a PM unless someone else wishes to see too.
I will get back to you later...and I wish the young lady had sent me the xrays before she went home from work... would be nice to see and look and make a decision as to what they show. The quick look in the Vet office just wasn't enough to really be sure about it.

Okay... Upper picture is at an angle to try to see any differences in the thickness of the cross. It's nails are nailed in at an angle you will see. Perhaps to make sure the nails did not protrude out on the inside of the door. This photo was taken from the bottom of the box towards the top of the box. You can see an arch form of nails which is the row of nails nailed inside the door to hold the wooden sheet the cross is nailed onto.

The cross from the back... turn the picture over in your head and see the arch of nails again as on the first photo. The other nails about are the ones used to hold the Laurel Wreath to the sheet of wood.

                        What do you see? Opinions?
Has anyone ever taken xrays of an item before? I'm just curious...

                              Interesting X-Ray results, showing IMO
a flat back on the large Iron Cross. As
such likely as previously stated, it being
the type used on a flag weather cover.
Also from your earlier front side photos,
if the back had a raised surface an edge
gap would show where thin paper could
slide under the edge above the wood -
                              another possible non-destructive test.

Very pretty teardrop flag top! I have one too but not exactly like yours. The flag top on the left... is the cross with an iron core? Beautiful... both of them. Very similar to the one in the museum page above in the thread.
Yes... my cross sits real flat on the wood and I couldn't use a strong light to get to shine out the other side. That doesn't say in itself that the cross has no back decoration on it as one could have indeed cut an appropriate sunk-in area in the wood to still get the cross to sit flat. But... yeah, the x-rays seem to point to the back being flat in itself. Whether it is engraved... good question if engraving would show up in an x-ray... maybe. I never really thought the thing was some undiscovered real Great cross as there were only a few awarded to the likes of Hindenburg and such and his is surely buried with him. I now know that the thing is likely flat with one sided decoration so MAYBE it isn't some fancy jewelers copy for a recipient to wear in his dress blues (could still be... who knows)...so it must be some kind of cross intended as decoration of something else. As said, could be one to wear... but which subordinate would have been fresh enough to ask to see the back of some bigwigs award...not likely. So it could be. And the place were it appears to have a ring removed on the top... confuses all this too. I do know it is no cheap deco for someones keepsake box though. I have maybe twenty of those around the house and those were never as well made as this one. none of those are silver... tin stampings. It has to have been made for some other purpose and then someone got ahold of it and just used it to decorate the box. This can't be the only one either. Someone has another one out there and knows more about it than we do. No jeweler makes a die and then only uses it once.
I will have to drag it into the shop and look at the it under the scope, which I will do soon. That will clear up the question about it being 900 or 800 stamped and it might give us more information in other ways. That will be the next step. I like it just fine as a deco cross myself but I bet it was made for some other reason than being nailed on this box :-)
