Imperial or Weimar Bayonet Knot ? no fuzz

    Hi,

I have this bayonet knot that doesn't have a "fuzzy" ball. It looks like the material on the ball has some honest age and wear, and the knot looks ok. It looks like it may have been fuzzy and was trimmed (?). The ball is a little more purple than the slide. Were there knots of this type that didn't have "fuzzy" balls (don't know the technical term ).

What's an approximate date range this would have been worn?

    Thanks

The reason this looks different is that it is a private purchase style knot. They were worn up until at least 1918 on dress uniforms and possibly beyond that date for traditions dress.

          Tim,

What is the material in the bottom of the Quaste where the metal pin penetrates to hold the knot together? If this is plastic, the Troddel is a reproduction.

            Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. The knot has a wooden piece at the core, not plastic, and nothing on it reacts to a blacklight. I feel ok about the construction, other than the material on the ball. It looks old to me and has wear, I'm just not sure if it started out life with that material. Maybe as Chip says it's a private purchase piece and that's why it doesn't have the "fuzz" I'm used to seeing.

            Any other comments?

              Tim,

Thanks for clarifying the construction material. The wood looked a lot like plastic on my monitor. I have a couple of Troddeln like this but it seems that the fuzz has simply deteriorated from the base material. So, this may be what has happened to your knot. The white (as opposed to wartime grey) strap would indicate it is peacetime issue. So, I would date it either just prior to 1914 or just after 1918 as these knots continued in use for awhile. It indicates the 4th Company of the Ist Battalion if it represents an Infantry unit.

              I hope this is helpful.

I was just looking through a book and found what looks like this knot's twin. ("Edged Weapon Accouterments of Germany 1800-1945" #19 on pg. 70).
