    A State a Day- Baden

Baden is larger than Anhalt so perhaps we can get a little more participation. My first contribution is a Zahringen Lion 2d class without swords. Some mid-level court functionary perhaps. I think the BZL is one of the most beautiful Imperial awards and nothing up in zinky TR land even comes close.

That's a helluva bar, Paul. Can you tell us more about Major Sauter? Is that NonCom OZL pre war or does it go with the, potentially, "black-white" non com EK2 from the war years?

Here is a NonCom EK2 Combination for Beamten...

I've posted this one a number of times before but it goes well with this thread. And Don is right that the OZL is one of the nicest medals going...

Another baden bar- it has the Baden Karl Friedrich Military Verdienst medal which is equal to the US Medl of Honor for an enlisted guy, and the Verdienst medal Grossherzog Friedrichs II (equal to the EK2).

The real beauty is that unlike most Imperial awards this one is named to the recipiant.

                  Don Doering,

I think that this (A State a Day) concept is terrific; but I would like to make a suggestion.

Would you consider going with a turnover of something more like three days? Work schedules, family commitments, etc. prevent many of us from daily participation. Of course, one can always go back post on an old thread; but staying with the flavor of the day is more fun.

Also, in going from Anhalt to Baden, we have skipped Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Kothen and Augsburg. Was this intentional?

Again, a great idea which should be a lot of fun, thanks.

                  Best wishes,

Three days works for me. I am focussing on the major states first to encourage participation. Once we get a couple under our belt we can dive in deeper.

Thank you. Something I forgot to mention with regard to the time factor. Since most of my collection is not kept at home, it can take some time to retrieve pieces for pictures.

While we are here in Baden, I would like to make note of something unique to this Grand Duchy’s award system. In recognition of campaigns served throughout most of the nineteenth century, they awarded a medal, Felddienst-Auszeichnung, with the appropriate year of the campaign(s) shown on a bar fixed to the medal’s ribbon. There was a total of approximately eighteen such bars ranging from 1805 to 1871.

One such bar, for the year 1870-71, is shown on the medal bar in post #8; another for the year 1813 is shown below.

                      Best wishes,

Major Sauter was in the clothing department of the Bavarian Army, hence the Hindenburg w/o swords. Why he recieved a 1914 EK2 combattant is beyond me. There seems to be no ryme or reason to how the EK NK was given out.

It has been postulated that those serving at home in the fatherland received the white black ribbon and those serving in the theaters of operations received the black white ribbon.

Here are my Baden medals. The first is a silver plated 'memory medal' of Friedrich I. Second is a very worn Friedrich II War Merit medal in silver. Last is a copper medal with an image of Heidelberg Castle, which is in Baden. I don't know what the inscription says...something about a school. Ribbons are all new. Ammersee
