    1914 EK1 & 2 wei.&meas. variances

There was a recent thread that asked for weight information for a 1914 EK1 marked KO and SW. When I reviewed my collection I decided to dig up all of the measurement information for the 1914 EK 1 and 2 and present the variations. The variations in measurements surprised me even within the same manufacture. The number of 1914 EKs that I measured is 93 EK2 and 8 EK1. Here is the measurement variations (low and high) for the 1914 EK1 and 2. The weight is given in grams and the lenghts and widths are in millemeters. All weights were taken with a digital scale and measurements were taken with a digital caliper.

    1914 EK2
    Weights: 13.9g - 20.9g
    Height: 41.9mm - 43.9mm
    Width: 41.8mm - 44.2mm
Eyehook: 4.5mm - 6.3mm (used to attach ring to frame)
    Ring: 11.8mm - 16.9mm
    Frame Width: 2.8mm - 4.2mm

The variations are large expecially the weight. Since I have over 15 different manufactures of the EK2. I decided to see if there was a variation within a manufacture. I have 11 1914 EK2 marked KO. The measurement variations are:

    1914 EK2 for KO
    Weights: 14.8g - 19.2g
    Height: 42.6mm - 43.2mm
    Width: 42.6mm - 43.4mm
Eyehook: 4.6mm - 5.2mm (used to attach ring to frame)
    Ring: 15.5mm - 16.9mm
    Frame Width: 3.3mm - 3.9mm

The variation is still large even within a specific manufacture. Again what is most surprising is the variation of almost 50% of the weight!

The measurement information for the 1914 EK1 is:

    1914 EK1
    Weights: 14.6g - 28.8g
    Height: 41.5mm - 43.4mm
    Width: 42.1mm - 43.2mm
    Frame Width: 3.0mm - 4.1mm
    Pin Length: 40.3mm - 44.8mm
    Pin Width: 1.3mm - 3.0mm
    Hingth Width: 9.8mm - 13.5mm

Again the weight variation is surprising. The 28.8g weight is for a EK1 marked 925. The 2 KO mark EK1 weights are 14.6g and 16.6g. The SW marked EK1 weight is 19.3g

What all this information tells me is that although there was a manufacturing standard for the height and width of the 1914 EK it was not closely followed. I believe that this was due to the fact that from 1914-1918 the EK was made my hand. I do not have a large collection of 1939 EK but since the manufacturing process was done by machine for the 1939 EK I believe that there is a tiny variation of measurements for the 1939 EK.
