I'm finally settling in to a new house and unpacking my collection. The good news is that as you unpack each box it's like Christmas in July, but occasionally you run across something that makes you scratch your head and wonder when, where and why you bought it. Bearing that in mind: [When]Back in the swinging 1980s I bought a bullion wire Marine Luftschiffer commemorative badge and Marine Luftschiffer Traditions Kameradschaft membership card together at [where] a gun show. As I am ever skeptical and always cheap (a crippling but frequently useful combination) [why] it must have been cheap (or maybe I'm kidding myself and I actually hoped it was good and I'm just writing this to deflect the abuse that will be heaped upon the badge when it is deemed to have started life in Karachi).
The membership card I'm confident is original. It's Ausweis number 37 named to a Fritz Fuhrmann of Hamburg and signed by the Kameradschaftsfuhrer whose name I can't read. The verso of the card shows that Herr Fuhrmann paid his dues for all of 1942 and only the first quarter of 1943. I haven't done any research (or know where to start for that matter) to see if Fuhrmann was indeed in the Marine Luftschiffer service.
Now, the bullion badge. It looks to have some age to it but the 1980s heralded a new wave of Indian and Pakastani bullion work and that, coupled with enterprising and artful dealers makes anything possible. Has anyone seen or heard of a bullion Marine zeppelin badge - original or otherwise? I did the obligatory search on the internet and nothing immediately came to light. I have some images of it but can't post to the forum. Any help or opinions would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Dave
