    1870 EK makers

    Hi!
I've asked this before, but since i got no answer, i'll do it again Is there a way tell witch(Godet or Wagner) manufactured a particular 1870 EK 2? Has anybody had the chance to compare 1870 EKs to that extent? I'd just like know witch made mine and purely out of interest

Godet and Wagner were the only official makers of the 1870 1st class, but there were probably a number of makers of the 2nd class. Most pieces from this period were not marked, so I don't know where one would even begin to sort out which pieces were made by whom.

I'm afraid it's not very likely that you will ever know who made it.

      Hi everybody,

Does anybody know why on some pieces are marked "J. Wagner & S., 14 Löth"? What does it mean? Could Löth have been an official "subcontracted" maker of Iron Crosses 1st class, made by Wagner?

Thank you in advance for your most interesting replies.

      Ciao,

      Claudio

"14 Löth" is the silver content. The old Prussian system of silver content was based on a scale of 1-16 "Lots", therefore 14 would be the euquivalent of 875 silver. Although the system was supposed to be phased out after 1860 and replaced with the 1-999 silver content scale, many makers continued to use it into the 1870s.

Ludwig Lauer was also an officially authorized maker of the '70 EK1. Hallmark consists of a simple " L.L."
