I doubt if it's too old. It looks like it's been artificially aged. Probably on a par with his definitely fake Pilot's Badge. I'm curious what his reserve is.

This EK is not one that I would put in my collection as an 1813. It's construction and aging point to it most likely originated in a cave in Arizona.
This cross is a very good reference for what new rust looks like. The more orange the rust, the more likely it is fairly new and of a forced variety. IMO this cross has been artificially aged to resemble something that it's not.
Hope this helps. An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

If the seller really believed or knew for a fact that that this EK was an original 1813 the reserve certainly wouldn't be $495. 1813 EKIs are incredably rare to begin with and after 190 years or so the survival rate is not high. In the 35 years I've been collecting the Iron Cross series I've been lucky to handle and examine exactly three (3) original 1813 EKIs. Maybe others here have been luckier in finding them but I'm still looking for one for my collection. If anyone happens to have an original 1813 EKI that they want to sell or trade please let me know. I could be a serious buyer for one. Heck, for that matter, I even have some very rare moon rocks to trade for it. Thanks!
P.S. Sorry about the want ad pitch. An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.
