And my ?, is there any good book about imperial decorations, like Niemanns 3rd reich catalog, where all the decorations (or most of them) would be shortly described and pictured? Except Nimmergut 5 volumes? (these are magnificent, but too expensive for many of us )

Short answer - unfortunately not. Besides Nimmergut's big books and his small OEK, there is no such book.

The book of Hessenthal und Schreiber describes all German decorations, but not the orders, and does show only some hand full. It is, for now about 70 years, the actually best book to cover all Germany, I'd say.

Two References of Some Utility

I am someone reluctant to add to this topic since I am new to the forum and the last post was about eight months ago. (I got hammered on the German Daggers Forum by a supposed expert when I spoke up in support of someone else.) However, in the hope of providing a little help here goes:

1. Werlich, Robert, "Orders and Decorations of All Nations, Ancient and Modern, Civil and Military," 2nd. ed., Washington: Quaker Press, 1974. Coverage of Imperial Items and former German States is limited, about 35 pages out of 400+. However, it does include at least an example of most of the major groups. For example two illustrations of the Prussian Red Eagle Order to represent the entire range of this Order. However, in defense of Werlich he states that he has attempted a Herculean task in this book and he knows how limited it is. It's the only English reference I had found. By the way, a US dealer in Imperial Items, whom I respect greatly, told me he did not know of any other general Imperial Decoration, etc., references.

2. Woods, Mark, "German Medal Makers and their Marks, 1813-1957," MJ Woods, 2009. (Apparently Self Published.) Again to the frustration of Imperial Collectors, only 24 out of some 200+ pages are explicitly devoted to Imperial items. However, in addition to a history of the makers in this period, it includes a list of "Older Imperial Marks," and "Common Makers Marks WWI/Weimar Era," as well as illustrations of a number of Hallmarks, and a list of "Unknown," but "Genuine" makers marks of this period. Most of the book is devoted to the Third Reich, however the last eighty or so pages are devoted to topics such as medal making techniques, metals used, "fixing methods," and a list of 535 known medal makers from 1800 to the present day. As an advanced beginner, I have found this book very helpful, especially in identifying EK marks. It is relatively inexpensive, and available, at least, from Collector Bookstore, Leavenworth, Kansas, www.collectorbookstore.com

Thanks for your note. The Woods book may be out of print. However, strangely, your note may have brought good luck to both of us. Woods is a Brit and has his own website, www.mwmilitaria.co.uk. I just went to it, and apparently he has added a new volume 2, with more information, and is offering a special price on Vols. 1 and 2!. (I will order vol 2 for myself. In this business I think the more you know the better! - if you can afford it.)

PS, On a personal note, your are in "Oberschlesien?" My knowledge of all central European geography is imperfect, but I assume this was once part of Silesia, which was annexed to Poland after WW2? I ask because my wife's 4th GrGrandfather, Carl Christopher Edmann Aulich, was a barber/surgeon in Festenberg, Silesia and joined (I think by force) the army from Hesse-Cassel, and served as a German Auxiliary in the von Bose Regiment with the British in the American Revolution. He surrendered with Cornwallis at Yorktown, was a POW for two years, and when the POWs were returned to "Germany" (which didn't really exist then), he deserted and settled in Virginia, hence my wife is here now. It's a small world.

The best book on the subject at the moment. 167 badges from 55 different makers are described and classified, plus miniatures, award lists, bars, ribbon bars etc.
