    Who is "S-W"?

Please (after slapping me) excuse my extreme ignorance if this is a very basic question, but who is the Imperial manufacturer of EKs who marked them with "S-W"?

      Thank you.
Did they make them during the Third Reich? I mean 1939 EKs?

        Hi George,

I haven't heard of them as a maker, maybe they didn't survive the depression or weren't in favour with the NSDAP?

        Here's their Imperial Logo;

          Thanks again!
Does this look like their mark? As you can see, it's on a 1939 EK 2.

And as you can also see, it's possible that the ring with the mark was switched to this cross from an Imperial one.

              Hi George!

George, that case pre-dates WW2! I don't believe you would see a case, stating "House Jeweler" in the late 1930's, early 1940's... Sye & Wagner were big time Imperial makers of quality Iron Crosses. They made both issue and private purchase pieces, with even the issue crosses (came in plain blue folded up packed stamped S&W) being of superb quality.

I'd check the LDO/Maker list in the back of the website and see if S&W had an LDO number... They couldn't have made it otherwise... but even then, I'd expect to see their LDO number or maker number on the cross....

It's possible that the larger ribbon loop could have been replaced, but doesn't that small loop look a bit oversized and skinnier than normal for a Third Reich piece?

                Regards,
                Brett

                  Brett,

"doesn't that small loop look a bit oversized and skinnier than normal for a Third Reich piece?"

                  It does.
                  It also:
                  a. doesn't look like it's ever been unbent, then rebent.
                  b. is so thin that it looks like it would snap if someone did bend it.

Here's a peek at another case with the maker in question. Notice the difference in logo as well as address.

This may sound like a stupid question, but is this a 3rd Reich EK we're talking about? It's obviously on a 3rd Reich RIBBON, but the cross itself is not visible in the photo.

In any case, even a 1939 EK could have been marked S-W if it was made before the LDO requirements were put in place in 1941.
