    Franco-Prussian medal in silver?

I've seen many of these in bronze, but none in silver. Is this one silver or maybe a late war zinc or other white metal? Thanks, Ammersee

The regular metal they were made of is bronze from captured French canons.

Non-Combattents were in steel and are ofter found with a bit of rust. Is yours magnetic?

You have on the picture steel Franco-Prussian War Honor medal. It was awarded for noncombatants. Something like Hindenburg cross without swords after the WW1.
Also it can't be late war award because those medals were established after the war and first combatant bronze medals got troops who took part in the parade of Paris (not 100% sure but I remember it this way).

Thanks for the info Timo. I was hoping it was silver , not steel.
It is not mine, but is for sale. It does not have any inscription on the edge so must be a steel non-combatant medal. Ammersee

            Hello Ammersee,

The information, above, that the combatants medals are bronze from captured cannon (and are so marked on the rim) and the noncombatants medals are steel, unmarked of course, is correct. At the same time, noncombatant medals made of silver are occasionally found on medal bars, usually to officers. These, of course would be “jeweler’s copies” but in such cases, personally I feel, are acceptable.

I hope that this information is helpful.

            Best wishes,

I just got an email from the seller and he says a magnet sticks to it strongly, so you guys were right on the money. Thanks, Ammersee
