EK1, 1914 - opinions?

Hello everyone,

I have a chance of obtaining this EK1 1914, screwback, and wanted your opinions on it. I'm sorry if the photos are not that good. I've never owned one of these (only the 1939 version), so my newbie questions are:

1) Is this a WWI-era piece, or a later replacement?
2) Is it a real one, or a fake?

My instincts tell me this is a good one, but as always I'll defer to the knowledgeable collectors here.

Looks to be a very nice Ek1. Definately not a fake. Most likely
a wartime private purchase cross. Checking the size would verify
if it was a TR era replacement or not.

I do not think it is a Godet screwback. Check it against the images
in our database. Maybe you can come up with a match-----

Wartime Vs Tr replacement seems to be the argument here regarding size, but where does that leave the years 1919-1932? I've seem AWS crosses that were quite large compared to wartime crosses like KO or KAG, but who is to say they were made after 1932? Can we draw an absolute if a cross is more than 42 millimeters it was made after 1932? I mean there are so many different materials, attachment devices, marks etc, why is it when a cross is bigger than the standard 42 millimeters, it's a TR era piece? What about the years between the two wars?

Hey Guys,

Based on your observations that it's a real piece, I just purchased it. Every once in awhile, you can still find a good, honest deal on flea-bay. I purchased it from an ebay store which has sold me other original items in the past.

I will post better-quality photos of it when I receive it, and take some measurements, so that maybe we can decide which maker made it and at what time period.

Now, having never purchased one of these before, I have to ask: Did I do well paying $275 for this cross?

I think $275 is a decent deal for a screwback. It's marked with 800 also by the looks of things.

I mis-spoke earlier. Most of the crosses that I might consider
post war 1920s-30s replacement crosses are similar in size to
awarded pieces. TR era crosses (even 1914s) of coarse would be the larger size. Officially any cross made after Sept.1939
should be the larger size but we know that is not really the case.
