    The hell of Verdun!

    Hi guys,

I am just back from another visit to Verdun. During our stay there we met the dutch "Battle of Verdun Website-Team" from

    http://home.wanadoo.nl/battleofverdun

Prepare to see some unbelieveable pictures soon!

For the old report (in German) and our old pics see

Looking forward to more Jens. I envy your ability to visit the Western front. I have a "water obstacle" that prevents me from doing so, as well as the Euro now. Es ist Juli, bist du ein Leutnant noch? Tony http://www.kaisersbunker.com/

      Thanks Tony! Leutnant? No, Feldwebel

It takes some days to prepare the pics. I think next week I'll start.

YEs, some very interesting things there- as far as western front visiting- i've only been to the Hackenberg Festung of the maginot-line...
and Tony- i think you mixed Jens up with me- he is the Luftwaffe Feldwebel- Im the Heer Leutnant (yes, since 1st of july)

        Gruß,
        KSM

          Ich bin doof

Kai, Jens, my apologies to you both. I knew you were both in uniform, but I got you both confused. I was expecting to hear that Jens is now a Leutnant as it is July.

            Next trips?

Is anyone planning on doing trips to any European mainland battlefields in the near future?

If so, what about travelling together or meeting up when we get there?

I don't have anything specific planned, but the Reichswald, Ardennes, Somme, Flanders, Verdun, Voges, Italy, Norway, etc. are on my permanent list of places to visit (again).

The Crimea, Ukraine and other points east are also of interest, but just vague ideas at the moment.

            Jens, Kai, anyone?

            /David

              Kai: CONGRATULATIONS 2nd LIEUTENANT!

David: Maybe I am again in Verdun on the first weekend of august and maybe later again.

                  The Hell of Verdun

                  Jens,

Thanks for the reference to this site! Viewing these photos gives me a very "eerie" feeling; I can only imagine how it must have felt to have actually been on a tour there. Not to mention the possibility of stepping on an unexploded shell, I can well understand why the visitors needed to "leave the area" after sunset....

Verdun has to go down as perhaps the most "epic" land battle of all time, both in terms of its duration as well as in the number of casualties inflicted...simply indescribable.

                  T.

                    translator,

if you visit the battlefield at night, you will get a very very strange feeling up to panic. A lot of people tried this and the most of them jumped in their cars after max. 15 min.
If you walk alone there (at daylight) you always get the feeling of "being never alone".
You can tell me crazy, but if such a lot of people get slaughtered in such a small area, there is more left than only bones...

                      Battlefield "Feelings"

                      Jens,

Agreed; similar "vibrations" are present on many of the battlefields here in the States (from the War Between the States 1860-65).
