Magnificent!!
Magnificent!! Perhaps THE finest mini prussian NCOs bar I have ever seen @ 1900-1915.
Almost certainly to an old member of Goben's 8th Corps and I'd bet $5 to an ex Feldwebel of either the artillery or the 9th Hussars (Rhein), since these units were detached and served in the vacinity of Paris. interestingly, there's no Metz bar, perhaps also indicating the hussars.
This guy was a long serving NCO - a professional who was probably born @ 1845, entered the army in @ 1870 and served in France. He served in the army until his contract was up-but long enough to qualify for his long service schnalle (21 years, old style ribbon-very rare), then got a civil service job, which was the reward for a full retirement from the imperial army and he then served/worked a LONG time. The civil general honor/meritaward was often given for 20 years service and the 1st class AEZ (the first medal) was given to senior state employees/bureaucrats after their 20+ years OR very rarely-to lower employees after @ 35-40 years of service.
I reckon this guy was a senior Reichsbahn, customs, police or postal official, as they often wore their uniforms with minis.
This bar cost some cash, so whoever made it was a bit waelthier than most and the centennial medal and the bars show it was made at the earliest in late @ 1899.
