    Phat Albert

    For Stevenn
"I've had this for years and have always wondered about the rarity as I've only ever seen one for sale.(Either Rittmeister or Stogie had one)How many were awarded and what sort of rank got them are the burning questions. Also, did any Oldenburg officers get them as it came out of that area.Thanks.Steven

Normally an Officer grade of the Saxon Albert Order was given to the rank of Oberst.

According to the fantastic "Die Orden des Königreiches Sachsen" by Dieter Weber, Paul Arnold, and Peter Kell, eccentrically published without a copyright date (recently) by Graf Klenau Verlag,

this "peacetime" (no swords) version, created 1890, was awarded

594 times in real gold and

      855 times in silver gilt

      between 1890 and 1918

      so

under 1,500 awarded. Saxony "recycled" awards, so when someone died, their badge was returned and given "used" to the next recipient. So number "awarded" doesn't mean that's how many there WERE-- could have been FEWER actually made, for this reason, or many more (duplicates purchased as private property).

        Jup, Rick is right.

Just to add, native Colonels, but foreign LtColonels. Foreigners got normally always a bit higher grades than natives. A foreign Colonel would get the Commander 2nd class.

        Best regards

        Daniel

Thanks for the information. It's great! I find it hard to get books on the subject as everything seems geared to 3rd reich or British.
