A Kürassier Pallasch From & For Tony

I'm posting these for Tony. A "Pallasch" is the long, straight bladed sword used by these heavy cavalry units as a "spear" more than a sword-- for stabbing, not thrusting.

First up a Guards Curassier uniform from his collection with the sword showing in front of the display.

Tony will have to explain how he manages to get legible blade scans, since on those rare occasions I'm able to borrow an off the shelf digital camera, I get nothing usable at all for blades!

This sword is from the 7th (Magdeburg) Curassier Regiment "von Seydlitz."

Close up of the hilt. This style weapon is not some sissy ballroom accessory-- these were made for one purpose and one alone-- massed cavalry charges into enemy troops.

Parade version ?

Hello Rick, I've got a similar sword, not in such pristine condition, they are pretty scarce over here. Mine has a double fullered 34" blade, with a charge of mini-cuirassiers down one side, ' Kurassier Regt. Von Driesen (Westf. No. 4) on the other. I was under the impreesion that this was a walking out pattern, but now believe it was a regular fighting sword. Thanks for the pics. , Newlyn

Size does matter!

I apologize for the horrible photo of my Garde-Kürassier-Regiment Sergeant. The blade on this example is 93 cm (36 1/2 inches) which mean in the scabbard, this Pallasch stands an amazing 109 cm (43 inches). The longest sword I have ever seen. A very nice cuirassier's pallasch! These magnificent swords for some reason are very tough to find.

After many years of looking for a decent example for my collection, the collecting gods smiled on me earlier this year. I came across a damascus bladed pallasch on a show table the first thing in the morning on day two of a three day show. How it survived dealer setup and the first day of the show is a mystery to me. Apparently whoever saw the just the price tag must have thought the price too high and never bothered to unsheath it and look at the blade. After regaining my composure and with some haggling, partial trading and plain ole hard cash it went home with me. Damn I looked a long time for that sword! It's one of my favorites.

Like your sword , the one I have is also one of the longest swords in my collection. The damascus blade is 35 1/4", with the grip it is 41 1/4 " and when sheathed in the scabbard it is 44" OAL.

Erk!

Wow! Other than the massive leap in value between these two Pallasches due to the Damascus blade, there are two interesting differences. Mine, being a Private Purchase Other Ranks/NCO, has a leather wire wrapped grip and a rounded pommel cap. Tiger's magnificent Pallasch is an officer's, with sharkskin wire wrapped grip and a correctly squared pommel cap. Tiger, thank you for sharing and Tom for posting. Tony

A very big thanks for posting these pictures for me. Cripes a' mighty! I thought this sword was big in real time! One thing though, Tom, I'm not sure the pics are better than sex . The actual sword, well......close but no cigar as Monica should have said ;>).

Thanks for the nice comparison and the update on the square pommel. I was wondering about that feature. I understand that this is the smaller "Russian" style hilt. The hard part is the lack of good reference material.
