    MVK3X w/ Crown

What does the Crown denote on the Bavarian MVK3X? Does it mean that it was awarded to a Sr. NCO or Jr Officer? I still haven't been able to crack the nut on what rank was awarded what medal?

    Thanks.

    Hi John,

the Bavarian MVO/MVK system is quite logical.

The 1st award somebody got depended on the rank of the recipient.
The 2nd award was always an upgrade of what he already had.

The MVK3 went to enlisted men, which could also update to MVK3wCr or MVK2
MVK3wCr was the entry award for Junior NCO´s, who could update to MVK2

    Best regards

    Daniel

By junior NCO I take it you mean Feldwebel (E4) and above?
      Danke,

        No,

just Unteroffizier. A Feldwebel would get the MVK2 as 1sr award.

          Daniel -

Okay, so if a solider was awarded the MVK3X with Crown for his first award what rank was he?

Probably Unteroffizer. In rarer cases also enlisted could get the MVK3wCr as first award.

            Best regards

I think the sequence was as follows:

MVK 1. Klasse mit Krone und Schwertern: Feldwebelleutnante, mittlere Beamte im Kriegsministerium
MVK 1. Klasse mit Schwertern: Feldwebelleutnante, mittlere Beamte und z. B. Feldhilfsärzte
MVK 2. Klasse mit Kr. und Schw.: Offiziersstellvertreter, Unterzahlmeister, Musikmeister
MVK 2. Klasse mit Schwertern: Vizefeldwebel, Feldwebel, Fähnriche
MVK 3. Klasse mit Krone und Schwertern: Unteroffiziere und Sergeanten
MVK 3. Klasse mit Schwertern: Mannschaften

                Upgrades?

                Jens and Daniel,

This is the sort of information I have been looking for.

Was it possible for the medal to be "upgraded" as an NCO rose in rank? Or would a new grade of the medal only be awarded if it was bestowed a second or third time?

                Danke und Gruss,

                David

                  Frosch:

This much I do know about awards. A solider that received an MVK3 w/ Swords for his first award would be awarded the next higher class as a second award . So, say a solider already had an MVK3 w/ Swords & Crown, his next award would have been an MVK2.

Yes, thats right. I've seen medal-bars with the MVK3wX AND the MVK3wXCr. As far as I know only the highest cross was worn. Any other opinions? Daniel?

                      Oje, that is quite tricky.
Bavaria was quite free in the regulations. Their dec could oftely be worn together. So if somebody got MVK3X and later MVK2X he could wear both and had not to return the lower class. Even sometimes a upgraded peacetime dec. could be worn together with the wartime dec. Unthinkable for other Germen states.
I´m not sure if for example a MVK3X and MVK3XwCr could be worn together. Different classes yes, but the same class 2 times????

                      Best regards

                      Daniel

P.S. Jens, perfectly sorted out! May You also post the Officer ranks fitting classes? You should have it
